Tips For Eating Healthy Even While Traveling

Maintaining healthy eating habits are hard enough when you're in a normal routine of going to work and coming home. When your routine is shaken up by unexpected travel or a weekend getaway, it's so easy to throw away your healthy eating routine due to the lack of being able to cook your meals. I find that when I am traveling and start eating poorly, I start feeling less energetic and even experience headaches. Luckily, there are simple solutions to eating healthy while you're away from home.

Be Picky About Eating Out

It's difficult to enjoy home cooked meals while you're out traveling or staying in a hotel room. Your first instinct is to eat out at a restaurant or a diner. You would be delighted to know that these aren't your only options.

I like to stop at a local grocery store to pick up pre-made meals in the deli section. Another option is to purchase some of the healthier microwave meals that are properly portioned and display their nutrition information on the box. This will help you stick to your daily caloric intake.

Pack Healthy Snacks

When you're out having adventures in amazing places, you're going to need a little extra boost in energy. This will usually take the form of snacking.

To ensure that I don't stop at a fast food restaurant for deep-fried foods,I like to bring a bag full of healthy snacks with me wherever I go. Mixed nuts, trail mix, whole fruit, whole grain crackers, and jerky are all healthy snacks that are high in nutrients and proteins.

I am always sure to drink at least one cup of water with each meal and one cup of water in between meals. This will help flush out any toxins in your body, keep your body hydrated, help you feel fuller longer, and prevent any cravings for junk foods.

Plan A Healthy Breakfast

When people tell you that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, they're not making it up. What you eat for breakfast can set the tone of your eating habits for the rest of the day. To ensure you make healthy eating choices for lunch and dinner, start with a healthy, nutritious breakfast. Whole fruit, whole grains, eggs, yogurt, and nuts are a perfect breakfast combination.

Sometimes I also like to look into packing the items needed to make yourself protein shakes for breakfast. The best lean muscle protein powder can work wonders for keeping you on a healthy diet and provide you with the energy and nutrition your body needs for a day filled with exercise, hiking, or walking.

Carefully Manage Large Portions

If you find yourself with no choice but to eat out at a restaurant, be very mindful about managing the portions you receive. There are restaurants that cater to customers who are concerned about their health. As such, you will find a small section of the menu with healthy food choices that are low in calories. You should definitely pick your meal from that part of the menu.

Should your restaurant not have such a menu option, I always go for the healthiest entree that I can afford and make some alterations to it. Ask for no butter. Ask them to bake it instead of frying it (if applicable). Choose steamed vegetables or a plain baked potato as a side.

One very important aspect of dining out to remember is that restaurants will usually serve very large portions. Do not eat the entire portion at one sitting. Instead, cut the meal in half, eat one half, and take the rest with you in a to-go box to eat for another meal. Managing your portions when eating out is such an important part of eating healthy while on the go or traveling.

With these creative tips, your desire to eat healthy won't have to be put on hold just because you're out traveling or find yourself away from home. The best tool you can use to maintain a healthy lifestyle is to plan your meals ahead of time. This will prevent you from stopping and eating somewhere unhealthy due to an impulse or a craving.
