Talking to Someone About Seeking Professional Help

If you have a friend or loved one who you think would benefit from speaking with a mental health professional, it can often be difficult to know how to navigate the topic - or even bring it up in conversation. I have certainly been in this very situation with some of my family and friends. Because of that, I'm always on the lookout for good articles about mental healthcare, reducing stigma, and talking to people about the importance of mental healthcare.

I recently read a really great article on LifeHacker about talking to a friend about seeking professional help. It had many great tips, some of which were:
1. the closeness of your relationship is important for how receptive the individual may be to the conversation;
2. make your case, i.e. identify problematic behaviors in specific terms;
3. offer to help, i.e. offer to accompany your friend to the first appointment and sit in the waiting room;
4. prepare for rejection.
