Balancing Family Time: What Are Doing To Make It Possible ?

Having a family member with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) has significant impact on not only your loved one with autism, but also on every family member.

Although I do not have a close family member with ASD, I have had individuals on the spectrum under my charge. Each of them different in, each of them special. The experience has surfaced immeasurable love and strength I did not know I had. It has also been very stressful and challenging. But I was only there for hours, whereas parents and siblings are ALWAYS there.

As parents, siblings or grandparents to individuals with ASD, this experience is must be several times more intense in every way. Enormous energy and time has to be put into caring for not just your child with autism, but also the rest of the family.

More often than not, parents over-focus on the child with ASD. This is not intentional. Striking a balance of equal time and attention is hard. My question to you is, what are you doing as a parent/ family to ensure everyone is equal close to equal time, some important time alone to de-stress, and any other support systems you have in place?
