How does pancreatic cancer affect daily life?

Learning that you or a loved one has been diagnosed with any form of cancer can be a trying experience. Depending on the stage of the disease and recommended treatment, pancreatic cancer can affect life in several ways for the patient, caregiver(s), and family/friends. Cancer of the pancreas can cause complications, such as:

  • Weight loss: pancreatic cancer or its treatment can cause nausea and vomiting, which may lead to unintended weight loss. Difficulty processing nutrients from food may also result from the pancreas not producing enough digestive enzymes.
  • Jaundice: yellow discoloration of the skin and eyes due to the blockage of the bile duct. This can often cause abdominal pain as well.
  • Pain: abnormal production of tumor cells in the pancreas may cause the tumor to press on nerves in the abdomen, leading to severe and persistent abdominal pain.
  • Bowel obstruction: large pancreatic tumors that press on the first part of the small intestine (duodenum) can block the flow of digested food from the stomach into the intestines.
