What causes anxiety disorders?

There is no exact cause for anxiety disorders, however, anxiety disorders may be caused by a combination of factors, including chemical imbalances in the body and environmental stresses.

  • Severe or long-lasting stress can change the balance of chemicals in the brain that control mood.
  • It can be inherited from one or both parents.
  • Trauma or a significant event might trigger an anxiety disorder.

Medical problems that can be linked to anxiety include:

  • Heart disease
  • Thyroid problems, such as hyperthyroidism
  • Drug abuse or withdrawal
  • Withdrawal from alcohol, anti-anxiety medications (benzodiazepines) or other medications
  • Rare tumors that produce certain "fight-or-flight" hormones
