What causes Alzheimer’s disease?

The cause of Alzheimer’s disease is not yet fully understood, but likely involves a combination of genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors. The significance of each risk factor may differ from person to person.

Genetics. Scientists have identified a number of regions of the genome that may increase risk of late-onset Alzheimer’s to varying degrees. Most cases of early-onset Alzheimer’s are caused by an inherited alteration to one of three genes, resulting in a type known as early-onset familial Alzheimer’s disease (FAD). Also, most people with Down syndrome develop Alzheimer’s, possibly due to an extra copy of chromosome 21.

The relationship between cognitive decline and vascular conditions (heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure), as well as metabolic conditions such as diabetes and obesity is of great interest in the medical community. More research needs to be done to determine whether and how reducing risk factors for these conditions can also reduce risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

Nutritious diet, physical activity, social engagement, and mentally stimulating activities are associated with maintaining health as one ages. Clinical trials are being performed to test if they may also help prevent cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s disease.
