Who Should Undergo A Total Hip Replacement Surgery

Being the most flexible joint, the hip joint is crucial to the human body as it is the second largest weight-bearing joint. Its ligaments ensure great stability to the joint. If the hip joint is damaged, it may affect the mobility of an individual. The hip joint ensures that human beings walk, run, jump, bend and carry out all the daily physical activities.

Total Hip Replacement is considered when the pain in the hip joint becomes so severe that the individual is unable to carry out normal day to day activities. The most common cause is arthritis. Osteoarthritis, typically an age-related condition, mostly occurs in people above the age of 50 years. As the wear and tear occur, the cushioning in the hip joint reduces and causes increased friction as the bones rub against each other. This causes severe pain. Rheumatoid arthritis is another disease in which the cartilage is inflamed, resulting in severe pain. In traumatic arthritis, an injury to the hip leads to pain in the hip.

A hip replacement can be performed by surgeons by using a minimally-invasive technique or in a traditional way. The major difference between the two procedures, standard hip replacement surgery and minimally-invasive hip replacement technique is the size of the incision. The standard hip replacement technique involves an eight to ten inch cut along the damaged side of the hip. It’s a minimally-invasive procedure, where the surgeons make cuts that are a few inches in length to operate. This very same procedure is then performed through smaller cuts as with standard hip replacement surgery. In recent times, some surgeons have been using this technique because the small cuts reduce scar appearance and speed healing. And considerably lessen blood loss, ease pain following surgery, and shorten hospital stays,

During standard hip replacement surgery , the patient is given general anesthesia to put him/her into a temporary deep sleep and relax his/her muscles. This prevents the patient from feeling any pain during the procedure. To prevent pain a spinal anesthetic may be also given.

After a successful hip joint replacement surgery, the orthopedic surgeon will ask the individual to rest and instruct the patient care team to monitor the blood pressure and other vitals. To prevent blood clots, the doctor will ask the patient to follow certain precautionary measures; walking a few steps by using crutches, which minimizes the chance of blood to clot in any way, wearing elastic stockings that can apply pressure to the lower legs and the blood will flow normally in the veins without clotting, taking medication as per doctor’s prescription that helps to thin the blood depending on the activity level of the patient, avoiding bending or lifting heavy things, using a western toilet instead of an Indian one.

With the availability of surgery packages online, patients can opt and decide what suits him/her the best. One must not avoid or overlook hip pain and swelling for years, bearing the pain. If the Hip Replacement surgery is not done on time, the stiffness in the joints aggravates making the surgery more complex. Moreover, the joint takes a longer time to heal due to excessive damage, which is caused due to delay in treatment resulting in a longer duration of surgery. So the delay should be averted.
