What causes vitiligo?

The exact cause of vitiligo is not well known. It is often considered to be an autoimmune disorder and in some cases, it may be hereditary. The condition occurs when melanocytes (pigment-producing cells), die/get destroyed and can no longer make melanin. Melanin is the substance that creates the pigment in one’s skin, eyes, and hair. Sometimes, vitiligo may be triggered by a certain event such as a sunburn, exposure to industrial chemicals, or a stressful experience.
