What causes obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)?

The exact cause of OCD is not well known. Some theories as to what causes obsessive compulsive disorder include:

  • Biology: It is thought that changes in body chemistry or brain functions may be responsible for OCD. The brain may not respond normally to the chemical, serotonin.
  • Genetics may play a role in the development of OCD. The specific genes are not yet known. If you have a parent or sibling with OCD, there’s almost a 25% chance another immediate family member will have it.
  • Environment: More research is needed on this theory, but environmental factors such as certain infections may play a role in developing OCD.
