What causes macular degeneration?

The cause of macular degeneration is not well known. It is thought that heredity/genetics as well as environmental factors such as smoking and one’s diet may all play a role. The condition is also age-related and develops as one gets older. It causes thinning and break down of the macula and eventual death of the macula cells. The macula is the part of the retina that helps with central vision and seeing fine detail.
