How does lung cancer affect daily life?

Learning that you or a loved one have been diagnosed with lung cancer can be very difficult and challenging. Being diagnosed with lung cancer can affect daily life in many ways, depending on what stage the condition is at and the treatment one receives. Cancer of the lung can cause complications, such as:

  • Experiencing shortness of breath if cancer grows to block the major airways. Fluid can also accumulate around the lungs, making it harder for the affected lung to expand fully when inhaling.
  • Bleeding in the airway, which can cause one to cough up blood (hemoptysis). Treatments are available to control severe bleeding.
  • Pain caused by advanced lung cancer that has spread to the lining of a lung or to another area of the body. For example, cancer that has metastasized to the bones can cause a great discomfort in the joints.
  • Accumulation of fluid in the chest (pleural effusion), specifically in the space that surrounds the affected lung.
  • Complications with other organs due to cancer that has metastasized to other parts of the body, such as the brain and/or bones.
