What are the common symptoms of hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoid symptoms tend to vary with their location. Internal hemorrhoids typically cause less discomfort than external hemorrhoids due to their location and may sometimes present with no symptoms at all.

Some common symptoms of hemorrhoids are:

  • Bleeding with bowel movement: bright red blood may collect on stool or on toilet paper
  • Pain/discomfort around the anus during or after a bowel movement
  • Itching/irritation around the anus
  • Protruding/prolapse: internal hemorrhoids can be pushed through the anal opening, causing pain.
  • Thrombosed hemorrhoid: external hemorrhoids may form clots due to pooling blood which can be extremely painful and swollen. These should be treated quickly for the best pain relief results.
