What causes Hashimoto's disease?

Doctors are unsure of the reasoning behind the disease. While some believe that the disease is genetic, others believe that the disease is triggered by a virus or bacteria. Your sex and age may also be an indication as to whether you will develop the disease or not. After giving birth, some women may experience thyroid problems which are called postpartum thyroiditis. This typically clears up in about 12-18 months however, women who have this condition are at a higher risk for developing Hashimoto's disease.
