What causes growth hormone deficiency (pediatric)?

In many cases, the cause of GHD is unknown (idiopathic). However, GHD can be caused by malformed or damage to the pituitary gland or the hypothalamus. The pituitary gland controls the body's balance of hormones, including processes like metabolism, blood pressure, and growth. The growth hormone causes a child to grow. Damage to the pituitary gland or hypothalamus may occur as a result of abnormal formation of these organs before a child is born (congenital), or as a result of damage that occurred during or after birth (acquired). With the pituitary gland in this condition, the production of growth hormones may be slow or insufficient for a developing child.

Congenital GHD can occur if there are mutations in genes for factors that are important in pituitary gland development, or in receptors and factors (including growth hormone) along the growth hormone pathway.

Acquired GHD causes include:

  • Head trauma
  • Radiation therapy for cancers (if the treatment field includes the hypothalamus and pituitary)
  • Diseases that infiltrate the hypothalamus or its connection to the pituitary gland, such as histiocytosis

From Our Blog: Steps toward Reducing Childhood Cancer
Childhood cancer. These two words immediately cause a cringe–especially for parents. It goes without saying that it’s one of the most difficult topics to breach; nobody wants to think about it. Unfortunately, over 10,000 new cases of childhood cancer will be diagnosed in 2017, and about 1,200 children may die from the disease. The earlier symptoms are noticed, the better. Knowing what to look for is imperative. If you notice any of the following symptoms, consult a professional immediately; don’t wait for the yearly appointment.
