How does eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) affect daily life?

Maintain a healthy weight. Excess pounds put pressure on your abdomen, pushing up your stomach and causing acid to back up into your esophagus. Ask your doctor for help in devising a weight-loss strategy that will work for you.

Avoid foods and drinks that trigger heartburn. Common triggers, such as fatty or fried foods, tomato sauce, alcohol, chocolate, mint, garlic, onion, and caffeine, may make symptoms worse. Avoid foods you know will trigger your heartburn.

Elevate the head of your bed if you regularly experience heartburn at night or while trying to sleep, put gravity to work for you.

Scarring and narrowing of the esophagus. This makes it difficult to swallow and more likely to have food get stuck.

Damage to the esophagus. Because of inflammation of the esophagus, endoscopy can cause perforation or tears in the esophageal lining tissue. Sometimes tearing happens spontaneously.

Environmental allergies to substances such as dust mites, animals, pollen and molds can play a role in EoE.

Overlooked by physicians and symptoms may be mistaken to be gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), or thought to be related to behavioral issues.
